“I’m glad she’s in jail too, baby. I hope they throw the book at her for what she did to you,” my mom says.

“You could have fooled me mom. It seems as if you have taken her side and stuff.”

I am really not feeling my mom right now. I feel as if she’s taking Mandy’s side instead of me. Onyx was defending me and even though the way he did it wasn’t the ideal way, he still was handling it. I wish I had seen her first so I could have handled her myself. Watching my mom cut that chicken turns my stomach and I find myself heading for the bathroom.

I take off for the bathroom and start throwing up. If I had made it to the bathroom a minute later, I would have thrown up all over the floor. Thankfully, I made it to the toilet in time. When I finish vomiting everything I ate earlier, I flush the toilet and rinse my mouth. I leave the half bath downstairs and head upstairs because now I need to brush my teeth.

“Are you okay?” my mom asks when I come out the bathroom.

“I’m fine,” I say as I make my way to the stairs.

  “Are you sure?” she asks.

  “I’m positive mom.”

I race up the stairs and straight for my bathroom. I put the Crest fresh mint toothpaste on my toothbrush and begin brushing my teeth. When I’m done, I pour some Listerine mouthwash in a cup and swish it around in my mouth. I spit the mouthwash in the sink and rinse it before heading back downstairs.

“I hope you ain’t pregnant,” she states as soon as I get back to the kitchen.

“What if I am?” I counter.

She stops putting her chicken in the pot, faces me and says, “You better not be.”

  “Or what mom?”

“I ain’t got time playing these lil’ games with you Starr. You just better hope you ain’t pregnant because the last thing you need is a big stomach to start your senior year,” she preaches.

  “Your opinion, not mine.”

“Oh my God, you are pregnant, aren’t you?” she asks.

“No I ain’t pregnant. But if I was, a child made with Onyx would be a child conceived from our love for each other and I wouldn’t be sorry about it one bit.”

The look on her face when I said that is one of pure anger.

“You cannot have a child right now,” she says.

“I never said I was pregnant. But make no mistake about it mom, if I were to get pregnant, I would have my baby. I love Onyx and like I said before, a child conceived by the two of us would be welcomed because we are in love and our baby would be a product of that love,” I say with a smile.

Of course I don’t think that I’m pregnant, but I love pissing her off. I mean, she pisses me off every freaking day when she forbids me to see Onyx, so I feel justified when I get her angry. My mom thinks she has the upper hand over my relationship with Onyx. She is fooling herself.

“Bullshit! You are in your senior year of high school with plans to go to college next fall. Don’t even joke about that shit because it’s not funny,” she says.

“Mom, you’re getting way too angry for no reason. I just told you I’m not pregnant, so let’s just drop it,” I say.

She returns to cooking her chicken and I make my way to the front door. I can hear Onyx shooting hoops, so I’m gonna go join him.

  “Where are you going?”

“Shoot hoops with Onyx,” I say.

“I told you I don’t want you seeing him,” she says.

“Mom, I’m going to shoot hoops with him. What, do you think we’re going to have sex under the basketball goal?” I ask.

“Don’t take that tone with me and I told you about getting smart with me already.”

“I’m sorry, but all I wanna do is shoot hoops with my best friend. Are you really going to keep me from doing that?” I ask.

“You damn right I am,” she says.

“You can’t be serious. You do know that I am old enough to make my own decisions,” I say.

“And you do know that you live with me so you are required to abide by my rules,” she says.

At that moment my dad walks in the door.

“Well if it isn’t two of my favorite women in the world,” he greets us.

He looks at the stares being exchanged by my mom and I and asks, “Oh lord, what did I just walk in on?”

“Mom won’t let me go shoot hoops with Onyx. She’s being totally unreasonable dad,” I say.

“Why can’t she go shoot hoops with him Nina?” my dad asks.

“I told her I don’t want her seeing him,” she says.

“Right, but all she’s trying to do is shoot some basketball with the boy. What do you think is going to happen?”

“I don’t want them together,” she says sternly.

“You are being ridiculous and I hate you!” I scream at her as I prepare to escape upstairs.

Before I am out of the room, I hear my dad tell her, “You are going to drive your children away from you Nina. You can’t control them like that. They are old enough to make their own decisions.”

I’m glad one of my parents understand.

“I’m her mother and I’m doing what’s best for her; whether she likes it or not.”

I run up the stairs and slam the door to my room. I flop down on my bed, fuming. I cannot believe this woman. She acts as if she were never my age or in love. I place my hand on my flat stomach and say, “I hope you’re in there little Onyx.”

  CHAPTER 3

  Mandy

My legal troubles are just beginning and I wish I hadn’t made the decision to hit Starr with my car. I was just so upset that she has my man. Onyx and I have been together for so long and I’m not ready to just throw in the towel just yet. I don’t know why people can’t understand that. I don’t know why Onyx doesn’t just come back to me.

If he wants someone to play basketball with him, I can learn. He didn’t have to start dating her to find someone to play with. Now that they have my car and have run the fucking DNA tests from the undercarriage of my car, I have officially been charged with attempted murder.

I can’t believe that I may actually go to jail for this shit. I was arrested and had to be bonded out by a bail bondsman. As a condition of my bond, I have to be under house arrest and wear an ankle monitor. I have to be in the house by eight in the evening. There’s also a protection order against me, so I have to stay away from Starr. I don’t want to go near her ass anyway.

I was thinking about talking to her to see if she would consider dropping the charges, but I read online that it’s out of her hands. It’s not her that’s pressed charges on me. It’s the state of Georgia that is taking me to court. Talking to Starr at this point will be pointless because she can’t do shit to help me get out of this mess. I know for a fact that even if she could help me out, she wouldn’t. I can’t say that I blame her though, because I wouldn’t help her ass either, especially if she had run me over with a car.

I pick up the phone to call my cousin, Lucy. Even though I can’t stand her ass for what she’s done to me, I need her on my side with this. I need her to testify on my behalf and let the people know that I’m not a bad person.

She answers on the fourth ring, “Hello.”

“Lucy, its’ Mandy. What you doing?”

“What do you want?” she asks.

“I’m in trouble and I need your help,” I say.

“If this is about you going to court…” she begins.

“Lucy, I need you to testify on my behalf. Please.”

“Girl bye! Do you realize I’m going through my own shit right now? I don’t have time for your bullshit that you caused!” she says.

“Yea, I know I fucked up but I need you…” I say into the phone, waiting for her response.

I don’t hear anything, so I call out her name, “Lucy! Lucy!”

Again, no response. I pull the phone back from my ear and see that she has hung up in my fucking face. Does that bitch know how much it took for me to call her in the first place? So, here I had to wrestle with my
self to contact her and now, just like that, she hung up on me. Sometimes, I really can’t stand my cousin. My mom thinks that we should be best friends because Lucy’s mom is my aunt and my mom’s sister, but I say fuck Lucy.

I think she’s been secretly hating on my life for years and now she is seeking payback for something. Probably some minor shit I did to her when we were kids. But this ain’t childhood. This is real fucking life and I could go to jail for this shit if I can’t find a bitch to vouch for me. I ain’t going to jail for a situation that I didn’t create and was forced to act on.

Onyx was happy with me until that bitch, Starr decided she wanted to be more than friends with him. I know she threw herself at him. Why do bitches always want what ain’t theirs? She had her own man, twice. Why weren’t they good enough for her?

I have a feeling she just wanted to cause me trouble and pain. Maybe I could plead with Onyx to help me out. Oh, who am I kidding? That nigga wants to see me fry more than that bitch. I guess I’m on my own, unless I can get my mom to talk to Lucy.

“Mom! Where are you?” I yell as I go in search of my mom.

“I’m in the den,” she says.

I head that way to find her sitting in her chair on the phone. As I listen to her conversation, I realize she’s speaking with my auntie, Lucy’s mother.

“Oh my God! Have you guys found out who did it? Are the police looking for the pervert who did this to her?” my mom asks, causing me to ear hustle more.

I take a seat next to her and asks, “What’s going on?”

My voice is barely above a whisper so that my auntie can’t hear me. My mom waves me off and continues her conversation. Soon as she says good bye, I’m all over her trying to find out what happened.

“What happened mom? What was that phone call about?”

“Did you know that your cousin Lucy was raped?” she asks.

“What! Lucy was raped? No I didn’t know. When did that happen?” I ask.

“Last week. She was raped by an intruder in her bedroom and the police are looking for him. Whoever he was, she cut his ass good with a razor so they’ll find him,” she explains.

“Damn! That’s crazy. No wonder she didn’t wanna talk about testifying for me,” I say.

“Testifying for you? For what?” she asks.

“Mom, I need someone to say that I was with them so I don’t have to go to jail,” I say.

“Uh, you do know they found that girl’s DNA on your damn car right? Either way you look at it, you may be facing some jail time,” my mom says.

“Gee mom, thanks for the support,” I say sarcastically.

“And that right there is what’s wrong with yo ass now. You’re always trying to be smart about some shit when people trying to talk to you. You shouldn’t have hit that girl with your damn car. What were you thinking?” she asks.

“I was thinking that she stole my man and I wanted him back,” I say.

“Onyx? Every stupid decision you make has to do with Onyx. Why can’t you just let that boy be? If he don’t want you, leave him alone. Are you so desperate that you have to keep chasing a man that don’t want nothing to do with you? Move on. I raised you better than that,” she says.

“I know that mom, but…” I begin to say.

“But nothing Mandy! You are in a world of trouble little girl. I don’t know how you think you’re going to convince these people to let you go,” she says.

“My lawyer says if I can convince them it was an accident, they might give me probation. That’s why I was calling for Lucy to vouch for me. I didn’t know she was going through all that stuff though,” I say.

“I didn’t know either and now that you know, leave her alone. I know you have a problem leaving people alone, but your cousin has been through enough. She doesn’t need you bothering her for some mess you done made for your own damn self,” she says.

  “Well damn mom…” I say.

“Watch your mouth young lady. You ain’t too old for me to pop you one in the mouth,” she threatens.

“I’m sorry, but you didn’t have to come at me like that.”

“I come at you any way I darn well please. I’m the parent and you’re the kid,” she says.

Awww shit! Here we go with this mess again. Every time I do or say something my mom doesn’t like, she hits me with that bull about how she’s the parent and I’m the kid. When is she going to get used to the fact that I’m not a kid anymore? I’m eighteen years old so in the eyes of the law, I’m a grown ass woman.

“Sorry. I’m gonna get out of your hair since I seem to be saying all the wrong things,” I say.

“Well, sometimes you do have a way with words and it ain’t always good words either,” she says.

I don’t bother to answer her. I just walk away before I blow up on her. As I’m walking to my room, my phone starts ringing. I check the caller ID and it’s my attorney. I didn’t want to answer but I knew I had to.

  “Hello,” I answer.

“Hey Mandy, I need to see you in my office Friday. Can you come around nine?” she asks.

  “What for?”

“You just need to come to my office. Nine o’clock and don’t be late. See you Friday,” she says before ending the call.

I wonder what she wants. Maybe she got the state to drop the charges or something. That has to be it. I make it to my room, throw my Future CD on and start doing the happy dance as I sing his song, Last Breath.

The next day, I woke up bright and early for my appointment. My mom had already left for work, so she couldn’t come with me. I haven’t received my car back from the police yet, so I will have to take the bus to my lawyer’s office. I hate taking the freaking bus, but what else can I do? My parents aren’t going to let me borrow their vehicles, not after the hit and run incident.

Once I’ve gotten dressed, I grab my purse and keys, lock the door and head out to the bus stop to wait. The closest bus stop is a couple of blocks from our house. I wonder why bus stops aren’t placed in subdivisions. I mean, not everyone that lives out here has a vehicle. I make it to the bus stop just in time for the bus. I step on and put my change in the little coin dispenser and take a seat.

The bus is about to pull off when it suddenly stops. Just great, some late asshole is going to make me late for my appointment. I don’t bother to look up until the bus is moving. When I do, I see this cute Latino looking guy walking towards me. He smiles and I return his smile before he settles in the seat next to me.

He is really hot. He has beautiful, thick black hair, smooth light skin and he has to be about six feet tall. He is sitting next to me, shoulder to shoulder and I can feel my nerves getting bad.

  “Hi,” he finally says.

“Hi,” I say, looking at him.

  “I’m Seth,” he introduces himself.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Mandy,” I say with an awkward smile.

He is smiling and his beautiful white teeth are shining through his luscious pink lips. Damn, this boy looks good. I haven’t had sex since Onyx started fucking with Starr, so my pussy is so wet right now, I can feel it sticking to my panties.

“You live around here?” I ask because I’ve never seen him before.

“I’m visiting some relatives. I’m from Oklahoma,” he says.

Oklahoma? He don’t look like no Oklahoma native, I think as my heart sinks. Even as sexy as he is, it doesn’t make any sense to lust after him when he lives so far. I am not into long distance relationships.

“Oh, Oklahoma is pretty far huh?”

“Yea, it’s a few hours away.”

I settle into my seat and look out the window.

“You have a boyfriend?” he asks.

Well damn. He sure is blunt. I like a man that doesn’t beat around the bush though. He sees what he wants and lets you know, rather than play childish ass games like Onyx.

  “No, I’m single.”

He moves a little closer to me, puts his arm on the back of the seat and says, “I
m single too.”

I’m looking into his eyes and at his lips and I wanna run my fingers through his hair. I don’t know what it is about this man, but there are some things I’d like to do to him. He’s so sexy and cute. He has a little goatee so I know he’s older than I am.

“How old are you?” I ask him.

  “21. How old are you?”

  “18,” I smile.

“You like older men?” he asks.

I’ve never been with an older guy before since my first boyfriend was Onyx and he and I are the same age. But, sitting here looking at Seth, I could definitely see myself with his ass. My pussy is clapping and my mouth is getting dry. I better say something before he thinks I’m retarded or something.

“I’ve never dated anyone older before,” I say.

“Well, there’s a first time for everything.”

Normally, I wouldn’t think of talking to a man who is riding the bus. I mean, he’s 21 years old and sitting on the bus to get where he needs to go. But, then I have to remember, he ain’t from here. If he ain’t got no car, he probably ain’t got no money. But, he’s so cute and sexy that I don’t care if he is penniless and walking. He is fine as fuck.

He licks his lips and says, “I’m fighting the urge to kiss you.”

Oh snap! This one really knows how to put the moves on a sista. I’m fighting the urge to let him kiss me. Thankfully, my stop is coming up.

  “That’s my stop,” I say.

  “Gimme your number,” he says.

Did I tell y’all he has pretty lips and an earring in his right ear? Oh my God, he’s sexy. I rattle off my phone number to him as he puts it in his smart phone. Well, he may be walking but he has money coming in from somewhere because he has the new Samsung Galaxy 7 and those aren’t cheap.

The bus stops and I stand up so I can get off. He stands up to let me by and as I’m walking pass him, my butt rubs against him. I can feel his stick rub against my backside and my excitement heightens. I feel like a giddy little middle school girl by the time I get off the bus. He waves at me and I wave back as the bus drives off.

I cross the street to my lawyer’s office. I let the receptionist know my name and take a seat. A couple of minutes later, Miss Quita comes to get me. I follow her to her office and take a seat at the round table. She sits with me and opens the file that I assume is mine. My thoughts are confirmed when she starts going through papers with my name on them.
